With the halls of astronomy and particle physics departments ringing with the clamour of worried scientists discussing the fate of their STFC proposals, I am pleased to report that I was successful with a completely different funding proposal.
I have secured funds to start a Public Speaking Club for the young researchers in my department. While it’s quite unnerving having to plan the first 12 meetings of the club, I’m looking forward to the challenge (and the refreshments budget won’t hurt either). We’ll be looking at all the different aspects of public speaking, to improve our ability to communicate science to academia and the general public, as well as developing important career skills.
I have some ideas about what to discuss at the club, but if you’ve got tuppence to chuck in, feel free!
